Untergiesing-Harlaching
Historical Background
The borough of Untergiesing-Harlaching consists of the two districts Untergiesing and Harlaching. Untergiesing was first mentioned in official records in 957, while Harlaching appeared as early as around 1150 under the name “Hadaleichingen.” Harlaching was incorporated into Munich on October 1, 1854. Until 1909, Untergiesing and Obergiesing formed a rural municipality. The development of Untergiesing primarily began in the 19th and 20th centuries, while Harlaching shows evidence of early settlement and archaeological finds from the Iron Age.

The borough is located in the southern part of Munich, east of the Isar River. It borders the borough of Au-Haidhausen to the northwest and the Isar to the west, with the boroughs of Sendling and Thalkirchen-Obersendling-Forstenried-Fürstenried-Solln located directly across the river. To the east and northeast, it borders Obergiesing, and to the south, it reaches the city limits with Grünwald, Pullach, and the Perlacher Forest. Untergiesing-Harlaching is divided into five district sections: Untergiesing, Siebenbrunn, Giesing, Neuharlaching, and Harlaching.

The development of Untergiesing shows a distinctly industrial character, shaped by its history as a working-class suburb with simple rental housing. A large portion of the buildings was rebuilt after World War II. Harlaching, on the other hand, is characterized by villas associated with the garden city movement of the late 19th century. Today, it is a prestigious villa district known for its location along the high banks of the Isar River. The borough has a strong presence in the service sector, including major institutions such as the Municipal Hospital Harlaching and the Orthopedic Clinic Harlaching. Sports clubs like TSV 1860 Munich and FC Bayern are also based here. In addition, the Hellabrunn Zoo and the Isar and Flaucher recreational areas offer leisure opportunities for the city’s population.
